If you are looking for a way to reduce stress, consider Tai-Chi. Originally developed for self-defense, Tai-Chi has evolved into an elegant form of exercise that is now used for stress reduction and a variety of other health conditions. Often described as moving meditation, Tai-Chi promotes serenity through smooth, fluid movements. What is Tai-Chi? Tai chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that is practiced today as an elegant form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed slowly, concentrated and accompanied by deep breathing. Tai-Chi has many different styles. Each style makes a subtle emphasis on different principles and methods of tai chi. There are variations within each style. Some styles may focus on maintaining health, while others focus on the aspect of tai chi as a martial art. Tai-Chi is different from yoga, another type of meditative movement. Yoga includes various physical postures and breathing techniques, along with meditation. What is Chi-Kung? Chi-kung (“Qi -gong”, pronounced chee-gong) is an ancient Chinese exercise and healing technique that involves meditation, controlled breathing and movement exercises. Qi-gong can be thought of as a movement you do for a certain situation, as opposed to Tai-Chi form, which is a series of movements that work on the entire body in a flowing sequence. Its physical expression is characterized by stationary movements that are repeated a certain number of times, such as three, six or nine times. Who can do Tai-Chi or Chi -Kung? Tai chi is low impact and puts minimal strain on muscles and joints, making it generally safe for all ages and fitness levels. In fact, because tai chi is low-impact exercise, it is especially suitable if you are an older adult who would otherwise be unable to exercise. Although tai chi is generally safe, pregnant women or people with joint problems, back pain, fractures, severe osteoporosis, or a hernia should consult their healthcare provider before trying tai chi. Through knowledge we have been able to get out of the caves, learned how to feed our peoples, how to cure deadly diseases and discovered wonderful worlds. However, knowledge has not necessarily made us wiser. In the same way in Tai-Chi we can acquire mastery of a large number of forms, techniques and styles, but such knowledge alone will not connect us with virtue and wisdom. Tai-Chi shapes are just the molded clay of the pot; the continent material of that hollow space that may eventually house infinite contents. For this reason, the usefulness of the Tai-Chi -like the pot, will not be in the form, but in that space of emptiness that is capable of generating internally; a space of pure potentiality and creativity. Where can I practice Tai-Chi / Chi -Kung? Both can be performed anywhere you feel comfortable moving: in the middle of the forest, or by the beach combining it with another adventure.

What to wear when doing Tai-Chi or Chi -Kung?

Tai Chi requires a great deal of bending, stretching, and moving.

As such, you will want to wear clothes that are comfortable and stretchy. While you want to be able to move in your clothes, you also want to make sure that they are not too baggy, as this can also make movements difficult.

You should bring a sweatshirt along with you for the end of class, but make sure the clothes you wear are cool –you will be working up a sweat.
