TREKKING FREY THROUGH THE RIDGE

TREKKING FREY THROUGH THE RIDGE

This journey through the Cerro Catedral massif is a classic in Bariloche. The day at the ski resort where the means of elevation are used to gain the edge of the mountain at 2000 meters above sea level, where you can already enjoy an incredible view of the Lake District. The trek starts following a path between rocks and stonework. The first hour of walking has some difficulty due to the rocky and steep terrain. There are times when you will use your hands to help you get around steps through the rocks and continue exploring the edge. There will be stops to hydrate, have a snack, and appreciate the Valle del Arroyo Rucaco, and at some point you be able to see Monte Tronador, Cerro Negro and sometimes Lanin Volcano far on the horizon on clear days. The walk will become easier and faster. After two hours of hiking, you will arrive at the Canchita de Futbol where there is a change of direction, heading towards the Schmoll and Toncek lagoons entering the Frey Valley, where the red granite spiers are magnificent and intimidating. On the shore of the Toncek lagoon there is a break for lunch and contemplation. Before you start heading back to Cerro Catedral there is a mandatory stop at Refugio Frey to learn about its history and mountain environment that is breathed in this classic refuge in Bariloche. Little by little you will leave the Alto Andino territory and immersed yourself in the humid Patagonian forest. Flowers and lichens color the trail. The Lengas get bigger and bigger as you go into the Valle del Arroyo Van Titter, and follow its crystalline waters while losing height. The last hour of the walk is a journey on the southeast side of the Catedral, that leads to the Ski Center parking lot.

RECOMMENDATIONS

What to wear hiking

Choose clothing made of quick-drying, moisture-wicking fabrics, such as wool or polyester. Avoid cotton, which takes a long time to dry when wet. You can think of clothing as separate systems:

Next-to-skin base layers: Made of wool or polyester, these are most important in cool to cold temperatures.
Hiking layers: These include nylon and/or polyester pants, T-shirt, sun shirt, sun hat. Bathing suit if weather permits, a boat ride is the perfect opportunity to jump in the Lake!
Insulation: Depending on the weather, you may need a puffy vest or jacket, lightweight fleece pullover, warm hat and gloves.
Rainwear: It’s wise to carry a waterproof jacket no matter the weather forecast. If you’re expecting wet weather, bring the rain pants along, too.

Comments:

Amazing Tour! Stunning sights and awesome guides. We had such a great time. We were a large group, but easily accommodated by Adventure Co. The location was amazing, the weather was perfect, and the sights were beautiful.
